GSSI Benchmark

The CSI Program retains RFM’s GSSI benchmark. The CSI Fisheries Standard will be benchmarked once in operation as is required by GSSI.

Ensuring Confidence

The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) is an independent benchmark for the credibility of sustainable seafood certification programs. The Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Program first earned the GSSI benchmark in 2016, and CSI is proud to maintain the RFM Program benchmark that was renewed in 2023 under version 2.0 of GSSI’s Global Benchmark Tool. GSSI was developed by a coalition of environmental NGOs, global businesses, industry experts, governments and intergovernmental organizations and is based on the codes and guidelines of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Why GSSI Recognition is Valuable

The GSSI Benchmark Tool works to streamline procurement decisions by making it easy for buyers to see which certification programs have met the rigorous bar set forth by the UN FAO’s internationally agreed guidelines.

The Benchmarking Process is voluntary and designed to be independent, impartial and transparent. To ensure the process remains so, GSSI recruits experts to provide objective assessments against the Benchmark Framework. The schemes are assessed by an Independent Expert and reviewed by a Benchmark Integrity Committee.

GSSI is included in the sourcing policies of the world’s largest retailers and seafood companies.
